Neon signs are an iconic staple of city streets across the globe – from Trafalgar Square to Times Square and Soho to LA.
Traditional neon signs are created by bending tubes of glass – an art in itself. The tubes are filled with a gas or mixture of gases (not always neon). When an electric current is passed through the tube the atoms of the gas become excited enough to strip electrons, which are attracted to the terminals at either end of the tube. They shed energy as photons as they travel, which is the light you see emitted from the tube.
The colour of the light depends on the gases used. For example, neon is red, helium is orange and argon is a lavender colour.
As you can imagine, there are few people left in the UK who are able to make traditional neon signs. Those that still do are wonderful craftspeople and we can take nothing away from the incredible skill they demonstrate, or the beauty of the product they produce.
But if you are after a more affordable illuminated sign, that retains some of the impact of a traditional neon sign, then one of our custom made neon LED signs might be (literally) right up your street.
Neon LED signs
Our neon LED signs use flexible strips of clear silicon-encased LEDs. We can bend and twist these in a similar fashion to the bent glass tubes of a traditional neon sign.
To contain the neon lettering, we router a path for the LED strip into a piece of 10mm thick clear acrylic or black foamex. We can fix the LED strip into this path to ensure it never comes out of shape. The specialist LEDs come in a range of colours. When shone through the clear silicon casing the effect is extremely close to that of a traditional neon light.
Choice of backing
The neon LED strip is inset into a 10mm thick piece of clear acrylic or black foamex. Clear acrylic is closer to a traditional neon sign where the illuminated letters appear to float unsupported and you can see the electrical wire running from letter to letter.
A black foamex backing will isolate the letters from the background and disguise the wires between letters. It is also a little cheaper than acrylic.
All-in-one neon sign kit
Our neon signs all come complete with power transformer and everthing you need to plug it straight into any 13A mains socket.
Need something more complex?
